Winifred Knight Dorsey

Winifred “Winnie” Knight Dorsey, 88, of Winchester, Va., died peacefully Friday, Oct. 7, 2016 at Blue Ridge Hospice in Winchester. Winnie was one of eight children, the daughter of Taylor and Sadie Knight. She was born Sept. 7, 1928 at her childhood home in Clarke County, Va. Winnie was employed at the National Fruit Company in Winchester before she married Horace Smith Dorsey, her loving husband of 64 years, on Jan. 6, 1952. She died with him by her side only a few hours before he passed away. She was a loving wife and mother and a caring homemaker who loved to prepare delicious meals and desserts for her family. Few rivaled her fried chicken or her homemade chocolate chip cookies and carefully crafted pies, and her pimiento cheese spread always was a hit with her family. She didn’t have a mean bone in her body and her sweet nature was endeared by all of her numerous nieces and nephews, whom she always greeted with a smile and hug. She was a longtime member of First United Methodist Church in Winchester and performed volunteer work for the March of Dimes. She is survived by her oldest son, Steven Smith Dorsey and his wife Bethanne Marie Dorsey of West Palm Beach, Fla.; daughter-in-law Annette Hinnant Dorsey of Winchester; grandsons Parker Graham Dorsey of Winchester and Timothy Edward Qualls of West Palm Beach; granddaughter Kimberly Ann Garcia of West Palm Beach; six great grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren. She also is survived by her sister Genevieve Ambrose of Chambersburg, Pa., sister-in-law Delores Knight of Winchester, and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her youngest son, Michael Knight Dorsey; four sisters, Kathleen Wisecarver, Evelyn Bromley, Virginia “Ginny” Carlisle and Elizabeth “Libby” McKee-Godfrey; and two brothers, Clarence Knight and Richard “Dick” Knight. Visitation will be Thursday, October 13, 2016, from 11:00 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. in Phelps Funeral Chapel, 311 Hope Drive, Winchester, followed by a celebration of life at 1:00 p.m.. Burial will be at Mount Hebron Cemetery, followed by a reception at Burnt Factory Methodist Church in Stephenson, Va. In lieu of flowers, please make donations to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W.
