Jack Dempsey Bailey

Jack Dempsey Bailey, 86, of Winchester died Sunday, April 27, 2014 at his daughter's home in Gainesboro, Virginia. He was born on March 5, 1928 in Lamar, West Virginia, the son of Joseph Moss Bailey and Della Ethel Roberts Bailey. He married Joyce Lee Lovell, on October 10, 1949 in Princeton, West Virginia. Mrs. Bailey is deceased. A welder by trade, Jack retired in 1990. His hobbies over the years included hunting, bowling, and dart baseball. He enjoyed fishing in the New River in WV and the Shenandoah River in VA. He had a garden every year and loved being outside on his tractor or riding his four-wheeler. He was a lifelong fan of the New York Yankees. One of his greatest joys came from singing and playing his mandolin. He also played guitar and banjo. He loved singing in his church choir and often performed at various hymn sings in the area with small groups. He was a member of Gainesboro United Methodist Church and attended Pleasant View United Methodist Church. Jack loved Jesus and is now at peace in His presence. Surviving are a daughter Janet Lynn Bailey Newlin and her husband Scott of Winchester; his brother, Howard Ray Bailey of Purcellville, VA, a sister Ann Marie "Bonnie" Houchins of Jacksonville, FL; grandchildren Michael Scott Newlin and his wife Christiane, Jennifer Beth Newlin Spielman and her husband Ryan all of Winchester, and great-grandchildren, Lani Beth Spielman, Joseph Bailey Spielman, Salomie Victoria Newlin, Teves Birkner Newlin, Silas Jack Newlin, and Kari Joyce Newlin. A son Joseph Roy "Joey" Bailey, brothers Ray Hoover Bailey, Frank James Bailey, Dewey George Bailey, Lonnie Bryant Bailey, Joseph McDonald Bailey, and Dale Jason Bailey, and sisters; Versie Ellen Youther, and Gussie Mae Blankenship are all deceased. A funeral service will be Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in Phelps Funeral Chapel, 311 Hope Drive, Winchester with Reverend Hung Su Lim officiating. Burial will follow at Shenandoah Memorial Park. Friends will be received on Wednesday, from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Phelps Funeral Chapel. Memorial contributions may be made to Blue Ridge Hospice, 333 W. Cork Street, Winchester, Virginia 22601.
