Mary Light Loy-Bowers

Mary Gereeta Light Loy-Bowers, 83, of Winchester, died Wednesday, January 8, 2014 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, Charlene and Carroll Anderson from a brief cancer illness. Gereeta was born November 10, 1930 in Grimes, VA the daughter of Otis Walker Light and Lela Gereeta Braithwaite Light. She married Clark E. Loy on September 5, 1947. Mr. Loy died June 22, 1990. She then married Ray “Gene” Bowers on December 10, 1995. Mr. Bowers died June 17, 2005. She worked at Bailey’s Store, National Fruit, Montgomery Ward and was a seamstress for Quality Cleaners. Gereeta was a very kind, outgoing and loving woman. She was an avid gardener of flowers and vegetables. She was also a fantastic seamstress making clothing for her family and the girls’ dolls. She made an assortment of home decor and civil war uniforms. She was a second mom to many of the neighborhood children and the girls’ classmates. She also enjoyed ceramics. She is survived by two daughters, Mary Jo “Jody” Barnett and her husband Paul and Charlene “Chuck” Anderson and her husband Carroll all of Winchester; A step-daughter, Bonnie Bowers of Stephens City; A step-son, Randy Bowers of Virginia Beach, VA; three grandchildren, Paul Barnett, III and his wife Sarah of Leesburg, VA, Chenoa Everett and her husband Andy of Berkeley Springs, WV and Sabrina Barnett of Winchester; two step-granddaughters, Faith Jacobson and her husband Tom of Colorado Springs, CO and Rachel Ferguson and her husband Jeremy of Winchester; three great-grandchildren; four step-great-grandchildren; three step-grandchildren and a brother, Hedrick “Rick” Light and his wife Georgieanna of Chico, CA. A daughter, Dorinda Kay Loy, is deceased. A funeral service will be Monday, January 13, 2014 at 11:00 a.m. in Phelps Funeral Chapel, 311 Hope Drive, Winchester with Rev. Kitty Hahn-Campanella officiating. Burial will follow in Old Stone Church Cemetery, Greenspring, VA. Casket bearers will be Carroll Anderson, Paul Barnett, Paul Barnett, III, Randy Cameron, Andy Anderson, Jr., and Ray Hoover. Honorary bearers will be Billy Lewis, Hedrick Light, Chance Klein, Buttons Bowers, Andy Everett, Randy Bowers and Jacob Everett. Friends will be received on Sunday, January 12, 2014, from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in the funeral chapel.
