Kevin Patrick Doherty Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Kevin Patrick Doherty, 59, of Winchester, died suddenly Friday, January 2, 2015 in Winchester as the result of a bicycle accident. He was born February 12, 1955 in Washington, DC the son of John Timothy and Ethel Dunbar Doherty, Kevin was the fifth of their ten children. Although one of many, he was one of a kind. He lived his early years on Spa Creek in Annapolis where he developed his love for the water. He moved with the family to Latin America, spent time in Georgia and California and served in the US Army. He married Betty Jo Manuel and settled in Winchester where they raised their son, Joseph. Kevin was dedicated to Joe, who was not only his cherished son, but his dear, dear friend. Kevin earned his BS in management and organizational development, cum laude, at Eastern Mennonite University. His 2010 graduation was a source of pride and accomplishment. He was a hard worker, a creative and respected leader managing purchasing, shipping and warehouse operations over the course of his career. He worked to live, but life came first; he lived it fully and with passion. He was a wonderful, smart, loving man. In the last years of his life he found great happiness with his soulmate, Monica with whom he shared a lifelong love of music, dancing, camping, kayaking and traveling. Kevin enjoyed debating politics and world events, but more than anything, spending time with the people dearest to him. He was the master organizer of fun: river adventures, fishing trips and camping expeditions. He leaves behind a grieving family: his son, Joseph Manuel Doherty; his partner, Monica Hoffman and her family; his mother, Ethel Doherty; his siblings, Mimi (Richard) Fox, Pat Tuccio, Kate, Jack (Judy) and Mick (Deb Chase) Doherty, Theresa Doherty (Mark) West, Julia, Brigid and Larry Doherty; fourteen nephews and one niece and their partners; three great-nephews and three great-nieces. He carried two generations of babies around on his shoulders, read them stories and rolled around on the floor with them all giggling uproariously. The littlest ones, Nico, Bella and Lorelei, adored him and will always think of him when they paddle a river or roast marshmallows over a campfire. Kevin lived a life of joy and integrity. Beyond death and beyond sadness we love him; he is ever in our hearts. A funeral service will be Saturday, January 10, 2015, at 1:00 p.m. in Opequon Presbyterian Church, 217 Opequon Church Lane, Winchester with Pastor David Witt officiating. Burial will follow in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Winchester. Friends will be received on Friday, January 9, 201, from 5:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. in Phelps Funeral Chapel, 311 Hope Drive, Winchester.
