James Wallace “Red” Hicks, 68, of Winchester died Wednesday, February 11, 2015 in his residence. He was born June 5, 1946 in Waldorf, MD the son of William Asa and Rachel Howlett Hicks. He was an avid race fan and regularly attended Winchester Speedway. Professionally, he was a heavy equipment operator for 50 years where he specialized in excavating and home building. He retired six years ago. He will be missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his sons, Paul Hicks and his wife Heather, Charlie Hicks and his wife Betty Jo all of Stephens City, and James “Pee Wee” Hicks and his wife Robin of Front Royal; four brothers, Bill, Harry, Carl, and David Hicks; grandchildren, Arold “Boo” Hicks, Whitney Hicks, Jarret Hicks, Alexandra Hicks, and Sherry Lynn Hicks. His parents, siblings Paul “Mouse” Hicks, Elsea Witt, Mary Jane Hicks, and granddaughter, Jordan Hicks are deceased. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday in the Phelps Funeral Chapel, 311 Hope Drive, Winchester officiated by Pastor John Lock. Burial will follow at Mt. Carmel Cemetery. Casket bearers will be Boo Smith, Jarret Hicks, Howard Hart, Nick Damron, Donnie Kenney, and Gary Hicks. Honorary bearers are his brothers. Friends will be received on Sunday from 6-8:00 p.m. in the funeral home.
